The
LEOPOLDVILLE Disaster Christmas Eve 1944 |

The
Belgian liner LEOPOLDVILLE had been engaged in the Antwerp
and Congo service and was taken over as a troopship when Belgium was invaded
by Germany in 1940. On the 24th December 1944 she was ferrying 2,235 men
of the US’s Army 66th Division (The Black Panthers) from Southampton
to Cherbourg to reinforce troops fighting the Battle of the Bulge. This
was the 23rd such passage the vessel had made. HMS

CHESHIRE
built in 1927 by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering, Glasgow for the
Bibby Steamship Co, Liverpool. Yard No620. Powered by 2diesel motors giving
her a service speed of 15½ knots. Measures 483 x 60ft 10,560grt. In 1931 she was taken over by the Bibby Line and in September 1939 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty for service as an Armed Merchant Cruiser In July 1943 she became a troopship and was broken up in 1957. |
